Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which makes it the easiest kind of plan: a whole evening, no work in the morning, and a neighbourhood that does the dressing-up for you. Brompton Road lit end to end, Harrods glowing across the street, Hyde Park ten minutes' walk for anyone who wants the dark before the dinner. ALBA sits in the middle of it at 70 Brompton Road, and on 31 October the dining room is dressed for the night. Here is how to spend Halloween in Knightsbridge, from the afternoon to the last glass.
Why Knightsbridge on Halloween
Most of London's Halloween happens in the dark and the crowd. Knightsbridge does it differently. The shopfronts along Brompton Road and Sloane Street go into their autumn windows, the department store opposite ALBA is lit brighter than anywhere else in the city, and the pavements stay walkable. It is a neighbourhood built for an evening you can see, which is more than can be said for most of the city on the last night of October. Knightsbridge station is a minute from ALBA's door and Hyde Park is a short walk north, so the whole plan sits inside a few hundred metres.
The Afternoon: Shops and the Park
Start in the shops while it is still light. Harrods is across the road from ALBA and Harvey Nichols is a few minutes further along, and both are at their best in the last weekend of October, when the autumn stock is in and the Christmas crowds have not yet arrived. If there are children in the party, a costume found in the afternoon is half the fun of the evening.
Then walk. Hyde Park and the Serpentine are ten minutes from Brompton Road, and the park at dusk in late October is the most atmospheric free thing in the neighbourhood: bare trees, the last of the leaves on the paths, the lamps coming on along the water. Loop back down through Knightsbridge as the lights come up on the shops, so you arrive at ALBA with the evening already under way. Our guide to the Italian restaurant near Hyde Park has the easiest route.
The Evening: Dinner Opposite Harrods
On 31 October ALBA's dining room is dressed for Halloween: pumpkins, cobwebs threaded through the Amalfi colours, and a drink or two at the bar made for the night. Beneath the decoration it is the dinner ALBA serves every Saturday, which is the point. Amalfi-inspired Italian cooking from the pass, the seafood display, handmade pasta and the wood-fired pizza, with the full-height windows looking straight across Brompton Road at Harrods lit up for the evening.
Arrive early for an aperitivo at the bar, take a window table if you can get one, and let the dinner run. The room suits a party of two as easily as a table of friends in costume. For anyone who would rather hand the evening to the chef, ALBA's ten-seat omakase counter runs its two Saturday seatings as usual, at 6:30pm and 8:30pm; a Halloween dinner at the counter, with the store glowing through the window behind the chef, is as good a seat as the night offers.
Groups and Costumes
Halloween is a group night, and ALBA has room for one. The semi-private sections seat from fifteen to fifty-five, the ten-seat Cabina del Capitano gives a party its own room, and the whole dining room can be taken for a larger gathering. Costumes are welcome. If you are bringing a group, say so when you book and mention the occasion, so the table is ready for it. The private dining in Knightsbridge page has the spaces and the enquiry form.
Booking Halloween at ALBA
Tables for 31 October are booked through the ALBA website. It is a Saturday and the window tables go first, so book ahead and mention Halloween when you do. For the rest of the season, our guide to autumn in Knightsbridge has the longer plan.
